Colorado has its own rules for how retirement income, including pensions, annuities, Social Security, and certain military retirement benefits, is treated for state income tax purposes. We take these into account as part of your overall plan and coordinate with your tax professional, since Raymond James and its advisors do not offer tax advice.
-
A financial advisor helps people make informed decisions about their money, including retirement planning, investments, budgeting, tax strategy, insurance, estate planning, and major life transitions. Someone should consider working with a financial advisor when they need a clearer plan, are preparing for retirement, have inherited money, are going through divorce, are selling a business, or simply want professional guidance to help align their financial decisions with long-term goals.
-
Financial planning focuses on the big picture—goals, cash flow, retirement planning, risk management, and long-term strategy. Investment management focuses specifically on building and managing an investment portfolio. While investment management is an important part of the process, financial planning provides the broader framework that guides those investment decisions.
-
When planning for retirement, individuals should consider their desired lifestyle, income needs, savings rate, investment strategy, tax implications, healthcare costs, and potential risks. Retirement planning is not just about reaching a number—it’s about creating a sustainable plan that supports long-term financial independence.
-
Personalized financial planning aligns financial decisions with individual goals, values, and life circumstances. By creating a customized strategy, individuals and families gain clarity, direction, and flexibility as their needs evolve. This personalized approach helps reduce uncertainty and supports consistent progress toward long-term goals.
-
meeting with a financial advisor?
During an initial meeting with a financial advisor, clients can expect a conversation focused on understanding their goals, concerns, and financial situation. This meeting typically includes discussing priorities, answering questions, and outlining how financial planning and investment management may help. There is no obligation—just an opportunity to explore whether the relationship is a good fit.

AI can help explain financial concepts and generate general retirement planning ideas, but it should not replace personalized investment advice. Current AI models may reflect common investment biases, including a tendency to favor popular stocks, recent trends, and strategies that may not fit your risk tolerance, tax situation, time horizon, or retirement income needs. At Lang Investment Services, retirement portfolio management is based on your personal financial picture, not a generalized model trained on what everyone else is doing.
*We primarily offer fee-based advisory services charging a flat fee based on a client's total assets under advisement. However, if deemed appropriate and in our client's best interest, we also provide commissioned brokerage services. Though our financial advisor provides clients with great care and recommendations, advisors only have a legal fiduciary obligation to advisory clients.
In a fee-based account, clients pay a quarterly fee, based on the level of assets in the account, for the services of a financial advisor as part of an advisory relationship. In deciding to pay a fee rather than commissions, clients should understand that the fee may be higher than a commission alternative during periods of lower trading. Advisory fees are in addition to the internal expenses charged by mutual funds and other investment company securities. To the extent that clients intend to hold these securities, the internal expenses should be included when evaluating the costs of a fee-based account. Clients should periodically re-evaluate whether the use of an asset-based fee continues to be appropriate in servicing their needs. A list of additional considerations, as well as the fee schedule, is available in the firm's Form ADV Part 2 as well as the client agreement. Services rendered will be dependent on applicable agreements.
